The Deep aquarium is set to promote Hull's renewables agenda by installing roof-mounted solar panels.
One of Hull's most famous landmarks, it has teamed up with Beverley firm Discover Energy to cut carbon emissions.
The Deep's chief executive officer Colin Brown said the building's wide roof made panels a perfect fit. He even hopes they will one day attract tourists.
Mr Brown said: "As a leading tourist attraction and a conservation charity, it makes perfect sense for The Deep to install solar panels to generate its own electricity.
"We have wanted to do this for some time. Indeed, once the solar panel installation has been completed it will become an additional attraction for visitors and we will have a video installation showing how the panels were installed and what their impact will be on The Deep."
Discover Energy is an increasingly major player in the solar market.
The business is installing more than 1,500 panels every month and has £1.4m of orders on its books.
Launched about a year ago, it rapidly secured scores of contracts and now aims to increase its workforce off the back of extra demand.
Operations manager Martin Bleasby said: "The Deep is a wonderful building and one of the best attractions in the region, so it's something of a feather in our cap to be selected to carry out the installation.
"This is a major project for us and we are going to record every step to show future visitors why and how we carried out this solar installation."
Discover Energy is holding a solar power seminar at The Deep on Tuesday, January 20.
It starts at 8.30am. Visit www.discoverrenewables.co.uk to book a place.
