An anti-fracking protestor superglued his hands together around part of a tanker lorry at the Crawberry Hill drilling site near Walkington. The man initially chained himself to the tanker using a chain and padlock, as it entered the Rathlin Energy UK site in Newbald Road this morning. He later superglued his hands together to make it more difficult for police to remove him. It is not clear how long he intends to remain locked to the tanker. About 20 police officers are at the scene and have managed to free and remove him from the tanker.
He has been treated by paramedics for hand injuries and he also reportedly suffered an asthma attack after being secured to the tanker for five hours. Campaigners have occupied a grass verge close to the site since May. Protests in the past six months have included building a tower to block the entrance to the site. Campaigner Jon Mager said: "The police were escorting the tanker onto the site which was due to take away the surface water on the drilling site. "The man managed to climb the ladder on the tanker and used a padlock and chain to secure himself. "He isn't coming down anytime soon and he is up there for the long haul." Last week, five anti-fracking campaigners were found guilty of obstructing a public highway during protests at the Crawberry Hill site in August. Rathlin has always maintained it has no intention of fracking – a way of breaking up shale rock to release natural gas – on land at Crawberry Hill.
