Hull City academy boss hits out at ref after Ryan Fallowfield injured by clumsy tackle in Middlesbrough defeat

Hull City academy boss Tony Pennock says players need to be punished for poor tackles – even in under-21s football – after seeing midfielder Ryan Fallowfield suffer a calf injury during the Tigers' 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough.

Fallowfield was forced to leave the field after a clumsy challenge from Boro's Harrison Chapman, but the substitute escaped a yellow card, infuriating the City dugout.

As frustrations boiled over towards the end with the Tigers pressing for an equaliser, official Paul Keogh then booked striker Karim Rossi for dissent in Tuesday's League Cup loss.

Pennock now wants to see consistency applied to any level of football for harsh tackles.

"That's part of the frustration for me. As well as it's under-21 football and they're all learning the game, I don't think players learn anything from not getting booked for a challenge like that," he told the Mail.

"Frustrations grew with some of the decisions he (Keogh) made and it ended up the way he did with arguing non-stop.

"For me he's caused it and we'll have to deal with the circumstances of that.

"Ryan is OK. He got a kick to his lower calf, but we'll see how he recovers during the week. We'll get some ice on it and see how it is."

The Tigers tasted their first defeat of the season thanks to Robbie Tinkler's early second-half header, and Pennock was left to rue City's lack of a clinical edge, despite praising his side's never-say-die attitude.

"Apart from ten minutes at the start of the second half I thought the lads played extremely well again," he added.

"I thought we got to grips with their formation in the first half and as the half went on, we played more attacking and attractive football and created a few chances.

"We hit the bar, had one cleared off the line, Rory (Watson) has made a good save before half-time and we should've come back in front.

"I think in the final third we need to be more clinical. We can be a little bit more patient and take a bit more care with our passing.

"Twice we hit the post and had one cleared off the line, and we'll watch the DVD saying 'Should we really be putting those away?'"
