HULL City are believed to have tabled an opening £1.5m bid for Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire.
However, the Mail understands the Tigers are likely to see their first offer for the 21-year-old rejected, having seen Wolves fail with a bid of a similar amount.
Maguire has emerged as one of City's top transfer targets as they look to add more promising youngsters to their Premier League squad.
The centre-half recently indicated he wanted to stop holding talks about his future at Brammall Lane, and has again been told the ball lies in his court over his future.
United are still prepared to sit down again and talk about extending his deal, which has a year left to run, .
Blades boss Nigel Clough said: "As far as we're concerned, nothing has changed.
"If we get a bid that means we can strengthen two or three positions then it's something, of course, we would have to seriously consider, but that's not happened and we also want Harry to stay.
"If it doesn't happen then the situation remains the same and Harry will start the season with us.
"The offer will still be there and we are happy to talk about it again if that's the case or he decides that's what he wants."
