A toddler needed surgery after he was bitten on the head by a rottweiler.

The 18-month boy and his mum were heading through the woods at the back of Raywell House in Raywell, near Cottingham when they met an elderly couple walking their dogs.

As they passed, the mum asked the couple if their dogs - a rottweiler and Staffordshire bull terrier - were okay to stroke.

The couple, in their 70s, said it was fine, but the rottweiler lunged forward and bit the toddler, who suffered a one-and-a half inch wound on the top of his forehead and a graze near to his left eye.

While the mum saw to her son's injuries, the elderly couple left the scene.

The little boy required surgery under a general anaesthetic to seal the wound. He has now been discharged from hospital and is being looked after by his family.

The attack happened between 11.45am and 12.05pm on Tuesday. Humberside Police have today appealed to the owners of the dogs to come forward.

Anyone with information should contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting log number 233 of June 10.
