TALKS have started on what entertainment could be brought to Beverley's new East Riding Theatre next year.

Affectionately known as "Ert", the theatre in Lord Roberts Road is the brainchild of Hollywood actor Vincent Regan.

The aim is to provide a professional regional theatre so touring companies can come to Beverley. At present, the town does not have anywhere to provide this service.

Sue Kirkman, theatre director and project manager, said: "Our choice of name deliberately reflects Vincent Regan's vision to provide high-quality, professional, regional theatre in a simple, yet functional and comfortable space.

"While we are working towards preparing the space as a flexible area in order to accommodate a variety of touring companies, we are talking to local and London-based playwrights and directors who have shown immense interest in our ideas for in-house productions."

Eminent Hull-born playwright Richard Bean, author of West End hit One Man, Two Guvnors, has described the chapel building as "atmospheric and begging to be filled with people".

To demonstrate his commitment, he has offered to join the list of sponsors once a fundraising campaign is launched next month.

Regan, who has starred alongside superstars including Brad Pitt, has the backing of Dame Judi Dench for ambitious plans to launch a professional theatre in Beverley. Dame Judi is patron of East Riding Theatre, a not-for-profit company.

Regan persuaded East Riding Council to lease out the Old Chapel to East Riding Theatre for three years. He told them it would also act as a receiving theatre for high-profile touring companies, as well presenting live music and comedy.

It could be used as a venue for some of Beverley's festivals.

There are plans for a café/bar, which could also be used during the day and for performances.

Theatre and arts-lovers in Beverley have long looked on enviously at the success enjoyed by venues like Pocklington Arts Centre, among others.

The idea of the new Beverley theatre was warmly welcomed by East Riding Council leader Stephen Parnaby.

He said the actor's contacts and passion would make the venture a success.

Regan is interested in being involved with the local festivals.

The theatre has already formed an association with Beverley Folk Festival, which will provide the theatre with a variety of music events.

With support growing in the town, a one-day mid-winter festival, celebrating theatre, music and the arts, will take place at the end of this month.

The festival on Saturday aims to provide afternoon and evening entertainment.

The venues will include Beverley Arms Hotel and Creation Fine Arts in North Bar Within.

Mrs Kirkman said: "Since official approval of the lease was granted in July, we have been working very hard in preparation for taking over the old chapel building in Lord Roberts Road.

"We are now in a position to begin to raise the profile of Ert and some much- needed funds to secure its success.

"Although the building is not yet suitable for performances, we are grateful to the Beverley Arms Hotel and Creation Fine Arts gallery for providing us with venues.

"We thank professional, local and London-based performers, for the diverse programme consisting of two excellent plays and a wide variety of exciting music.

"Due to such generosity, all proceeds will go towards the new theatre."
