A WOMAN who crashed her car while more than four times over the drink-drive limit has narrowly avoided being sent to prison. Elaine Burnett, 55, told officers who found her sitting on a garden wall that she had downed half a bottle of vodka or gin the night before. Tests showed she had 148mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg. Deborah Gibson, prosecuting, told city magistrates the offence happened at 12.30pm on August 15 in Gillshill Road, east Hull. She said: "The defendant drove her car into a parked car in Gillshill Road. "She mounted the verge, causing damage to a wheel. "The parked car sustained almost identical damage as a result." Burnett, of Oak Tree Drive, east Hull, admitted drink-drinking and told police she had an alcohol problem. Carl Codd, in mitigation, admitted the high reading was a concern, but added: "Gillshill Road has a lot of parked cars on both side. There is a lot of weaving involved. She misjudged a gap." Mr Codd said his client had lost her job "by some very underhand tactics" last October, which had taken its toll. Burnett was given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. She was also given a 12-month supervision order and ordered to attend a six-month alcohol rehabilitation course. Burnett was also disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to pay £165 in costs.
