The fourth Yum! Festival of food and drink has opened today in Hull city centre. Thousands of people are expected to attend the event, which runs until Saturday, after organisers extended the programme into the evenings. Visitors to Queen Victoria Square can sample a huge range of food and drink, watch cookery demonstrations and listen to live music. And fun food activities for children at "The Vegetable Patch" include decorating cupcakes and making fruit kebabs. Mark and Sharon Beresford, of Spanish food specialists Amor Espana, are taking part in Yum! for the first time. Mr Beresford said: "We wanted to bring Spanish food to the city. "It is great that Hull is giving traders here an opportunity to promote their businesses. "We take our stall to a lot of festivals and we find that after people come and see what we do, they come back again. "It is important for the people in Hull to see all the good things going on in the city." Oliver Jackson and his son Adam, eight, from Hessle, were among food-lovers emjoying the festival today. "It is another great festival for Hull," Oliver said. "It's something a bit different and another chance to showcase the city."
The "Main Dish" stage is at the heart of the festival and will host cooking demonstrations by top chefs during the day and bands including Hillbilly Troupe and Soul Patrol in the evenings. Kathryn Shillito, of festival organisers HullBID, said: "It is all about giving local businesses the chance to promote themselves for free. "The festival is growing year on year and the key to that success is the enthusiasm from businesses and the range of stalls and attractions we are able to offer. "Local businesses have so much to offer in Hull and it is great to have such fantastic support once again."
