A DAUGHTER has praised Mail readers for coming to the rescue of her grandmother's cats.

Emma Brown, 38, appealed for help in homing four cats after her grandmother, Daphne Shaw, died one day after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

She feared the stress of looking after four extra cats would put her mother, Anne, in hospital.

Emma said: "I would like to thank Mail readers for their help, it really took a lot of pressure off.

"Marble, Gizmo and Jaffa went to homes last week.

"We have also had Hull Cat Protection and their head office in Sussex on the phone saying they've got places now.

"It has really helped."

Daphne went into Castle Hill Hospital for her monthly blood test, but in the afternoon her family were told she had leukaemia and she was "too far gone".

She died the next day.

Anne described the past few weeks as a nightmare with no cat charities having any room to take in her mother's pets.

As well as grieving the sudden death of her mother, she was also looking after Daphne's four cats and dog, along with her own two cats and dog in her North Bransholme home.

Anne is looking after the Shih Tzu named Albert.

Emma, who lives off Leads Road in Hull, said: "My nana really loved cats. She was 83 and very active. Before she moved to Hull, she volunteered for many years at Cats Protection in Scarborough. All the donations at her funeral were made to the Cats Protection because of her love for cats."

Anne, 62, suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes and is a full-time carer for her disabled partner.

The cats which have been homed are ginger cats Marble, seven, and Jaffa, 18, and grey and white cat Gizmo, seven.

Anne said: "The piece in the paper has been a marvellous help and now three of the cats have been homed.

"No one was interested and no one was able to help me initially, but now they are all going to really good homes. It is a massive weight off my shoulders.

"Apart from the cost, it was the time taken to look after all the cats that was a struggle and clearing two litter trays.

"My cats were also taking offence to the other cats and just staying upstairs.

"I did think I would struggle finding a home for 18-year-old Jaffa, but a lovely lady from Orchard Park wanted her.

"I was tempted to keep Georgie, but she wants to keep going outside so it would be unfair to keep her.

"Cats Protection have been in touch and have said they could take her in."
