THE region's cultural diversity will be celebrated during an event to help strengthen ties between the police and local communities.

Humberside Police's Forum is organising the function in a bid to encourage communities to become involved with policing across the region.

The forum hopes to inspire people to make a real difference in their communities, as well as attract police recruits from different backgrounds.

The event will take place at Mr Chu's China Palace, at St Andrew's Quay, on the evening of Wednesday, June 19, and people from a range of backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

Inspector Sevtap Bolton, of the community safety unit, feels it is important the police understand all cultural backgrounds.

She said: "We want to break down barriers, perceptions and stereotypes between local communities and Humberside Police and celebrate diversity in an informal manner, meeting local communities and experiencing different cultures.

"We are very keen to encourage people from different communities to become involved in policing and want to use this as an opportunity to engage with people with a view to showcasing Humberside Police as a employer of choice for local diverse communities, be it as a volunteer, special, PCSO, police staff or officers from local diverse communities."

Insp Bolton hopes events like this will help improve trust in community policing.

She said: "We want to increase the public confidence in Humberside Police from all our communities and ensure we are more reflective of our local population.

"This event is one way in which we hope to achieve this."

The event comes at a time when racial and religious tension has grown following the brutal murder of soldier Lee Rigby by alleged terrorists in Woolwich last month.

Two people have appeared in court on suspicion of arson following reports petrol bombs were thrown inside a mosque in Grimsby.

Last week, Muslim prisoners were alleged to have made "extremist demands" while holding a prison officer hostage at HMP Full Sutton, near Pocklington.

The English Defence League has held a series of marches across the country, including in Hull.

Hull and East Yorkshire United Against Fascism is holding a demonstration, starting in Victoria Square in the city centre, on Saturday at 1pm.

Anyone wishing to attend the Humberside Police Forum event should call the force community safety unit on 01482 220706 or email SPOCCommunitySafetyUnit@humberside.pnn.police.uk for details.
