Sun-seekers pack out beaches and parks - but good weather won't last

BANK holiday weekends normally conjure up images of wet and miserable weather but glorious sunshine had people flocking to the beaches and parks.

Temperatures reached 20C yesterday, making it the warmest day of the year so far.

Families enjoyed a day out, with many heading to the coast or enjoying one of the region's many beauty spots.

Not so long ago, raging storms were battering the coast and temperatures were struggling to get into double figures.

But it looks like summer finally is round the corner with T-shirts, rather than coats, the order of the day.

It was certainly a bumper day for many businesses that have suffered with the poor weather so far.

Mr Moo's ice cream parlour in Skipsea, near Driffield, has been very busy.

Employee Will Clappison said: "We have been absolutely packed out all weekend.

"Sunday was really busy and we had queues going out the door.

"It has been a big boost for business. We haven't been struggling as such, but it has been slow so far this year.

"Hopefully, this means summer has finally kicked off and it will be like this throughout the holidays.

"Our vanilla ice cream has been selling well, as always, but toffee has also proved popular this weekend."

The Pavilion Café at East Park in east Hull has also enjoyed a brisk trade this weekend.

Margot Robertson, who helps run the cafe with her husband, said: "East Park is always busy when the sun shines. We have had lots of families come in. It has been a lovely weekend with a great atmosphere."

Mrs Robertson admits the balmy weather is good for business.

She said: "We are lucky we have such a lot of loyal regulars who come in most days.

"But it is always good to attract so many more people when the weather is good.

"We have had lots of cold drinks and ice cream ordered by lots of people with happy faces."

Pauline Wilkin has owned The Bucket And Spade shop in Hornsea for more than 20 years and relies heavily on the trade that visitors bring.

She has been delighted with the soaring temperatures.

Ms Wilkin said: "It has been really busy and there have been lots of people round.

"I haven't even managed to get to the beach because I've not managed to leave the shop.

"It was busy yesterday from when I opened the shop at 9am.

"The whole weekend has been busy but the bank holiday Monday was the busiest.

"It is great to see so many people out enjoying their chips and ice cream.

"I have sold out of sun cream while the buckets and spades have been going very well.

"It has been difficult with the poor weather, so I have been very happy with the weekend."

Hornsea Mere has also proved a very popular destination this weekend.

Mark Blake runs the cafe at the mere.

He said: "It has been extremely busy all weekend. The café has been packed and all the rowing boats have been out.

"We also had the Beverley Ukulele Orchestra yesterday so it's not stopped.

"The car park and the golf course have also been full.

"It is great to get this good weather but we have been busy all year luckily."

Good weather won't last ...

In typically British fashion, the good weather isn't set to last.

Today

But southwesterly winds will keep coastal areas cooler and there could be some sea mist.

But, come Wednesday, there will be more cloud with some rain which will become more persistent later in the day.

Thursday will be even windier with showers continuing. Temperatures will also tumble, only reaching highs of 13 or 14 degrees Celsius.
