Disappointed City fans still believe their side can clinch automatic promotion despite losing to Barnsley this afternoon.
The 2-0 loss at Oakwell now means the Tigers will have to beat champions Cardiff City at the KC next weekend to guarantee promotion.
Goals early in each half from Jacob Mellis and Chris O'Grady condemned a City to defeat and means they have taken just one point from their last three games - all against the Championship bottom three.
Martin Walker, of the Avenues, watched the game at the Linnet and Lark.
He said: "Barnsley outplayed us and the better team won. It's a bitter pill to swallow.
"We have got just one point against the bottom sides recently which isn't good enough. But we just have to fight on and beat the champions.
"I feel it is now 50/50 but we can still do it."
His wife Jenny added: "I'm massively disappointed. We have played so well most of the season but we seem to crumple under the pressure.
"But, even if we don't get automatic promotion, we have done it in the play-offs before."
Russell Woollass , of west Hull, said: "I am really disappointed with the result but it is still up to us.
"We have played 45 games this season but now it comes down to just 90 minutes.
"I think we will nick it against Cardiff and hopefully Leeds will do us a favour and beat Watford."
James Evans, 25, and a teacher at Sirius Academy, was at the match. He said it was important not to get too down-hearted.
He said: "Obviously, I'm disappointed but we need to remain positive as promotion is still in our hands.
"I felt there wasn't enough passion and Barnsley wanted it more.
"We have to raise our game against Cardiff or we'll get battered."
City are now just one point ahead of Watford. If they match Watford's result next week they will go up.
But if they lose and Watford draw, the Hornets will be promoted as they have a much superior goal difference.
Speaking after today's match at Oakwell, Steve Bruce thanked City's 5,700 travelling fans and said he was disappointed his side could not produce a better performance for them.
He said: "It was an awful performance if we're being brutally honest. We'll regroup tomorrow and go again.
"What's got us in this position is our ability to bounce back.
"We haven't played to anywhere near the level we expect from players who have got us to the top of the league.
"We've got to go again and be better next week. It should be a great occasion.
"Cardiff are going to play with no fear, but I hope we can produce a big performance, the sort we've seen at the KC many times this year."
