RESIDENTS have expressed concerns about the number of accidents on Holderness Road after a pedestrian was killed.

The victim, thought to be in his 60s or 70s, died at the scene after he was struck by a Dutch-registered lorry, close to Holland Street, east Hull, at about 3.20pm yesterday.

The accident happened on a pedestrian crossing but it is not known at this stage what colour the lights were on at the time.

Some distressed staff from nearby shops who witnessed the accident were sent home early.

One resident told the Mail there have been a number of accidents on that stretch of road.

She said: "My sister-in-law works close by and heard this bang, then a scream.

"There have been lots of accidents around that pedestrian crossing.

"I don't know what happened in this case but a lot of vehicles just don't slow down."

The road was closed from Mount Pleasant to Southcoates Lane.

Ambulances, police and fire crews all attended the scene.

Crowds of residents and shoppers gathered close to the scene to find out what was happening.

Staff at the nearby Lucky Star restaurant handed out cups of tea and coffee to the emergency services as they dealt with the accident.

Many residents struggled to gain access to their homes and the road remained closed for several hours, which caused gridlock in the city centre.

Bus firm EYMS said the crash has affected all services heading to east Hull, Bilton, Hornsea and Withernsea.

Traffic had to be diverted out of the city centre down Mount Pleasant, New Bridge Road and Southcoates Lane.

EYMS chairman Peter Shipp said the diversions caused difficulties.

He said: "New Bridge Road isn't exactly designed with buses in mind and is very narrow.

"A lot of traffic was being diverted around the area, so it was very crowded."

A police spokesman said the area was being treated as a crime scene while an investigation was carried out to determine exactly what happened.

Crash investigators worked on into the evening.

But no arrests had been made as the Mail went to press.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Humberside Police on 101.
