DEPRESSED Hull FC star Brett Seymour was heading to drive off the Humber Bridge when he crashed his car, his wife has claimed.
Roseanne Seymour said her husband confessed to the suicide attempt after he overturned his BMW when he smashed into two parked cars on Hessle.
Seymour was released from his £130,000-a-year contract with the club this week after being on compassionate leave since the crash on March 3.
Mrs Seymour, 31, told a Sunday newspaper: "Brett said he'd taken a handful of tempazepam pills, washed down with wine."
"He was sobbing, crying in a way I have never seen him before, it was heartbreaking.
"He told me he was in a daze and couldn't think rationally. He said it was terrifying not being in control of his mind and he was ashamed at wanting to leave his daughter and me."
Hundreds of rugby league fans have sent messages of support to the player after Mrs Seymour revealed he was battling depression following the accident.
Seymour, 28, is currently undergoing three weeks of treatment for depression in the Sporting Chance rehabilitation clinic in Hampshire.
Mrs Seymour said her husband had been left upset by fans' criticism during Hull's 36-16 defeat to Widnes the day before the crash.
Hours before the accident happened, he kissed her and their 11-month-old daughter Monroe goodnight.
Mrs Seymour said she was woken at 2am and taken to his bedside at Hull Royal Infirmary.
"He told me, 'All I could think of was driving off the Humber Bridge. I can't explain it, it just overtook me, I wanted to kill myself, I'm so sorry, I just wanted to end this.'"
Fans have continued to send messages to the couple of the Facebook page, Brett Seymour Get Well Soon, after his release this week.
Darren Palmer wrote: "You never stopped trying and that is all we as Hull FC fans ask. I know you'll be back on song soon. And you can bet you'll get a massive reception if you ever get to play at the KC again.
"Top bloke, top player and a true black-and-white."
Lisa Harrison wrote: "Good luck Brett to you and your family for the future, get well soon! You'll be missed at the KC in a black and white shirt. So sad your leaving."
Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
