A PROLIFIC burglar, who had a "catastrophic effect" on his community, has confessed to more than 50 house break-ins stretching back more than a decade.

Daniel Davies, 25, has admitted committing 56 burglaries in the Hull area – some dating back to 2000 – as part of Humberside Police's campaign, Cleanslate.

Davies asked for several burglaries to be taken into consideration while he was in Everthorpe Prison after receiving a 54-month sentence last December for robbery.

Davies pleaded guilty to two charges yesterday at Hull Magistrates' Court, with the remaining burglaries to be taken into consideration.

He will be sentenced later this month.

Detective Inspector Nicki Miller said his admission meant officers could go back to the victims to give them the closure they need.

"We never give up on bringing offences to a resolution and this shows the persistence of officers has paid off and we can now give the victims the result they have been hoping for," she said.

"Across the force, officers give offenders the opportunity to 'cleanslate' when they are in custody.

"This allows them to admit to any other offences, similar offences, or lesser offences and have them taken into consideration, which gives them the opportunity to leave prison and make a fresh start."

There was a 32 per cent detection rate of crimes in Hull and the East Riding last year.

DI Miller said: "While Davies has admitted other offences in the past, he has never admitted dwelling burglaries, until his last sentence for robbery.

"This can be as a result of legal advice or fear of a longer custodial sentence.

"Davies was only out of prison for short periods of time, but he still managed to have a catastrophic impact on the community.

"The fact he has spoken to officers in some detail about the offences, why he did them and why he targeted specific properties, allows us to go back to victims to explain this and allow further crime prevention advice to be given to ensure the victim feels safe and protected.

"I would like to reassure the people of Hull that police work hard to ensure that all crimes are solved and offenders are brought to justice.

"For those offenders who don't take the opportunity to maximise Cleanslate, the police will pursue all investigations, therefore if offenders are serving sentences or have been released and new evidence comes to light, we will arrest them and, where possible, consider further charges."
