THEY went head-to-head with the UK's most prestigious pies.
And East Riding sausage rolls triumphed for taste and texture.
Now it is official – Drewton's Farm Shop, near South Cave, makes the best sausage rolls in the country.
Better still, judges at the national British Pig Executive (BPEX) Foodservice awards named Drewton's rolls the Best Pork Bakery Product category for 2013 – they beat all the pies.
Katie Taylor, who owns and runs Drewton's Farm Shop, had been delighted when her homemade sausage rolls, pork pies and breakfast mushrooms stuffed with Yorkshire sausage meat and wrapped in bacon had all achieved Gold awards in the annual contest.
But the big thrill was that her sausage rolls, made in-house by head baker Kath Brown, had been shortlisted for the top prize.
When they became the rolls of honour, Mrs Taylor said: "I'm thrilled for Kath, John, Hellen and the rest of the team.
"Our sausage rolls and other homemade goods are a real team effort.
"We were delighted to win three Gold awards for our pork products, but to walk away from the awards ceremony with the very top award was the icing on the cake."
Drewton's sausage rolls are no big secret in the East Riding, where queues of people often snake around the shop.
Mrs Brown bakes them freshly every day using sausage meat prepared by head butcher John Lund.
The meat is of the highest quality. It comes from places like Anna's Happy Trotters pork business in Howden – a high-welfare free-range outdoor pig herd, which also scooped several awards at the BPEX roadshow and produce evaluation event at the Great Yorkshire Showground last month.
The British Pig Executive strives to maintain excellence in the pork industry and ensure that quality and a fair deal for producers are not compromised by supermarkets seeking to drive down prices.
Its Red Tractor logo, which is now widely recognised, indicates the quality and country of origin of the pork.
It also shows it has been produced responsibly to rigorous standards, is traceable back to farms and independently inspected at every stage of production.
British Pig Executive Foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger said: "Having top- quality pork dishes on menus is crucial to satisfy today's discerning customers and this competition rewards the very best in the business."
The 2013 BPEX Foodservice Pork Product of the Year competition drew in 128 entries from chefs and catering suppliers.
Mrs Taylor said: "The Pork Product of the Year awards are highly regarded in the industry and attract entries from all over the country, so it's a huge honour."
Mrs Brown and Hellen Dimmock, delicatessen manager, attended the awards lunch at Butcher's Hall in London.
Delayed by a problem on London Underground, they only just got to the ceremony, but made it in time to bring the award back to Yorkshire.
