A GOLFER from East Yorkshire has wowed one of the world's biggest golf tournaments.
David Lynn, from Kirk Ella, raced into a lead over the world's greatest golfers in the prestigious US Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
The 39-year-old finished four under par with a round of 68 ahead of legends like Tiger Woods and Fred Couples.
It was a dream start for David, on his debut in the tournament, and he set the target for favourites including Woods and England's Justin Rose and Lee Westwood.
David, described by the Washington Post's live coverage correspondent as "an eccentric Englishman", was eventually dislodged by Australian Marc Leishman who shot a 66 to go six under par. Spaniard Sergio Garcia also caught up and overtook David to finish tied with Leishman.
As the first day's play closed American Dustin Johnson finished on five under to leave David in joint fourth place in the 93-strong field.
After his round David said: "It might be that I've been grafting away for 16-years so I guess I have a lot of experience behind me.
"I was on the ninth and my caddie said 'You're leading the Masters.' He just looked at me and smiled. I said 'I'd rather be leading it Sunday afternoon'
"It's obviously not a bad thing to see your name up there leading the Masters and something you could look back on. But you know there's a lot to be done for the rest of the week and hopefully I can keep my name up there."
Farrell Evans, a reporter for American sports network ESPN, said he had been impressed by David's play.
He added: "Based on that performance, it wouldn't be surprising to see him hang around the lead through the weekend."
The US Masters is one of the world's best known golfing tournaments and for 2013 the prize money on offer is around $8million with $1.4million (£936,000) to the winner.
Previous winners include Tiger Woods, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo,
Wigan born David, who moved to East Yorkshire two years ago, now practices at Hull Golf Club. His partner is Sally Moore, who is a director of her family's Hull-based security business.
On his golf bag, David carries a logo for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
David's previous best tournament was when he was runner up in the PGA Championship, which along with the Masters, is one of golf's big four tournaments.
The Masters is held over four days and finishes on Sunday.
