Paul Cooke: Neil Hudgell right to criticise Hull KR players

HULL KR chairman Neil Hudgell has every right to come out publicly and heavily criticise the players after Monday's club-record 84-6 loss to Wigan.

It was strong stuff, as he accused players of not caring about their performances or the club.

I'm not too sure what impact they will have in the changing rooms, as I have been part of Rovers' sides myself in the past which have been criticised in a similar way.

In fact, I'd bet many of them will be talking amongst themselves about him never pulling on the jersey, and having never played rugby at this tough level.

However, when they look back on their careers, they'll remember the chairman's words, and they will do so by remembering he is a man who deeply cares about Hull KR.

Looking back, his commitment to the club is something I certainly took for granted during my time as a player at the Robins.

I can tell the players first hand they should listen intently to the chairman. He pays their wages and without him or his investment the club may not exist, something other clubs have seen first hand recently.

There are many chairmen out there who are never heard of and are unapproachable.

Hudgell is not one of those. The performance of the team, on and off the field, is something he deeply cares about.

I know how gutted he will have been on Monday afternoon – he has been devastated enough to publicly accuse the players of not being bothered.

Hudgell is the man who continually puts his hand in his pocket, along with Rob Crossland, to finance the club.

They have made no secret of their willingness to listen to potential investors, as having worked so hard to take the club into Super League, they now want it to become a real force in the game.

It is with that in mind that Hudgell probably said he was now considering his own future at the club.

Personally, I don't doubt his commitment to the Hull KR cause.

He may now be looking at a way out but, in my opinion, will not walk away without leaving them in a better position than himself being at the helm.

Yes, he's disappointed at results, performances like Mondays, the lack of investment from the RFL and the state of the game in general, but above all else he is a fan of Hull Kingston Rovers.

The players may well want to remember that his opinions match 99 per cent of those who watch from the terraces each week.

A marked improvement and nothing less from those very players this weekend will be accepted by Hudgell or the Red and White faithful, but that will be tough.

Such a loss can take time to get over, and the emotional scars could be visible for weeks, even months.

So how do the players and staff at Hull KR find some positivity on the back of the past five days?

It is a huge task again for coach Craig Sandercock, as he has to address Monday's loss without making it too mentally scarring for the players.
