THE sister of an East Yorkshire soldier shot dead in Afghanistan last summer has been killed in a car crash.

Jennie Stone, 28, had been overtaking a truck at Fraisthorpe just minutes after dropping her son off at school when her blue Peugeot 206 hit another car.

Jennie's car then struck a tree beside the main Hull to Bridlington road at 9.15am yesterday.

Her brother, Private Gregg Stone, 20, was killed on June 3 last year while on a mission to rescue a senior Afghan police chief.

Their distraught parents Angie and Bob Stone, who live near Hornsea, said the family is now "broken" after the latest tragedy.

"We had not even come to terms with losing Gregg," said Bob.

"If we were not already broken after he was killed, we are now.

"Gregg was the missing piece in the jigsaw. The jigsaw is now in pieces.

"This has absolutely killed our family."

Earlier this month, Gregg's brother Kallum, 19, followed in his footsteps and joined the Army.

Speaking then, Angie, 56, poignantly told the Mail: "I don't think life would that cruel to take two of my sons."

Jennie had moved into a new home in Bridlington on Sunday with long-term partner Dave Parker and Charlie, nine, her son from a past relationship.

Bob said: "It is just so incredibly sad. We are in shock.

"Jennie absolutely idolised her brother, Gregg.

"As a mum, she was simply the best. There is no other word.

"We have had to sit down and explain to Charlie that he will never see his mum again.

"His eyes are red raw from crying so much – that's when it hits home."

Jennie, who had been due to graduate in September from the University of Hull with a degree in social work, had dropped Charlie off at Skipsea Primary School.

She was alone in the car at the time of the accident on the busy A165.

Police say her car crashed with a Vauxhall Astra, before hitting a tree.

The driver of the Astra was uninjured.

Firefighters, ambulance and police all attended. Jennie was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bob, 46, said: "Angie and I only saw Jennie on Sunday night.

"We helped her, Dave and Charlie move into their new home."

Last night, Army staff drove Kallum – in week two at Infantry Training Centre, Catterick, in North Yorkshire – home to his family.

Bob said: "His commanding officer and the centre's padre took him to one side and broke the news.

"They were already well aware of the family's situation."

Jennie joined her parents, sister Rosie-Ann, 20, and brothers Kallum, Graham, 30, and Jamie, 31, for Gregg's repatriation at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

In torrential rain, she stood in the village of Carteron, where the hearse carrying her brother's coffin passed through, clutching a rose.

A Humberside Police spokesman said officers want to speak to anyone who witnessed the accident.

He said: "Investigations into the cause of the collision are now under way and witnesses are being sought.

"It is believed two cars may have been at the scene following the collision for a time but left prior to the arrival of police and officers are keen to trace the two motorists who were both heading towards Bridlington, along with anyone else who was in the area at the time."

Witnesses are asked to call Humberside Police on 101.
