Only Hull KR's players can stop the rot, says Cory Paterson

CORY Paterson has called on his Hull KR side to dig themselves out of the early-season mess they have got themselves in. Still searching for their first win of the season after a 36-20 defeat at Wakefield, it's the first time Rovers have started a Super League season with back-to-back defeats. But with Widnes set to arrive at MS3 Craven Park on Sunday, Paterson says only the squad's hard work can rectify the situation. "It's definitely up to the players to fix it," said Paterson. "We are the ones out there missing tackles and giving away penalties. "It's frustrating because when we get our fair share of the ball we can be a match for anyone. "We keep shooting ourselves in the foot and it's not like teams are beating us, we are beating ourselves. It's torture. "We need to pull our finger out sooner rather than later, but there's no need to panic. "The last two weeks haven't gone down well with me and I want to put it right." Despite losing his first two league games as a Robin, Paterson feels his side are close to turning things around. But the 25-year-old knows they need to be smarter and eradicate their silly mistakes. "We're not far off at all," said Paterson, who scored a try in the weekend defeat. "The effort is there and it's not like we are getting well beaten each week. "It's silly stuff at the moment. We need to control the controllable elements of our game." For the second week running, Rovers gave themselves a mountain to climb after a slow start and Paterson admits his side must do a lot more to stay in the game longer. "We sometimes get rattled and we need to settle down a bit and defend errors better," he added. "We compound things by conceding a penalty or coming up with another error. "It's a long season, though, and there are 25 more games to play. But there's nobody hurting more than the players."
