A BRAVE bride-to-be who had to have her legs and hand amputated made her TV debut this week.
Debbie Grant and her fiancé Bob Bury appeared on Nursing The Nation – an ITV programme following district nurses around East Yorkshire, Liverpool, Devon and Bath.
Debbie, who lives with Bob in Gilberdyke, had to have her limbs amputated after she contracted a severe strain of pneumonia.
Thursday night's programme showed Debbie getting used to her prosthetic legs and was filmed last summer.
The Mail spoke to the couple last week, ahead of the show.
After watching herself on TV, Debbie, 44, said: "It was like watching someone else. I didn't realise how bad I was.
"I think I have come a hell of a long way since it was filmed."
Episode five of the weekly series showed Debbie and Bob, 63, at home.
Debbie was learning how to use her prosthetic legs and was sleeping on the sofa, as she could not get upstairs.
At the end of the programme, she had a stairlift fitted and was able to climb on to it to get upstairs and into her own bed.
Debbie said: "I started crying when I was watching it.
"It was quite embarrassing. Bob and I both looked really run-down and tired.
"But at the time, we were hardly getting any sleep."
Debbie was struck down with the illness just one day after a wedding dress fitting.
She was hospitalised and went into a coma for several weeks.
When she awoke, she had to have both legs amputated below the knee, her right hand removed at the palm and the little finger on her left hand removed.
Bob and Debbie made the difficult decision to postpone the wedding, which was due to take place last year, so she could walk down the aisle.
The big day will now take place this spring, and Debbie says there will not be a wheelchair in sight.
She said: "It was very surreal and weird when they were filming at our house.
"They came to the house six times, but they didn't screen as much as I thought they would.
"They showed me shuffling around a bit with my wheelchair and then the nurse dressing my hand."
The programme makers also interview Beth Sellers – Debbie's district nurse from Humber NHS Foundation Trust.
The next episode of the programme will be aired at 8.30pm on Thursday.
