CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans to build 141 homes on greenfield land near their homes can expect a decision in the next few weeks.
An appeal was heard in Beverley this week after East Riding councillors roundly rejected an application by Linden Homes to build on land off Woodhall Way.
Despite being advised by their planning experts to approve the plan, councillors branded the scheme a "mish-mash" and threw it out.
Planning Inspector Kathleen Ellison was in Beverley this week for an appeal hearing that took in both sides of the argument.
Closing the arguments for the developer, Ian Dove QC said: "There is no sensible objection raised to the principle of developing this site, in particular in the circumstances where the council has a clear and pressing need for further housing land and no means through the forward planning process of sites being brought forward in the shorter-term."
Since councillors rejected the proposal the land in question has now been included in the council's Draft Development Plan, meaning it is flagged for development as part of East Riding targets to step up house building.
Woodhall Way resident Thelma Brown is one of the most vehemently opposed to the development.
She said there are access problems and the land is known to be at flood risk.
But even Mrs Brown recognises there might be a need to permit the right sort of development.
She said: "You have to look at each scheme on its merits.
"If the plan was less dense that would reduce the hard-standing and the flood risk."
