A POTHOLE described as a silent killer by concerned motorists has been fixed.
The Highways Agency has carried out repairs on the A63 hours after the problem was brought to their attention by the Mail.
A spokeswoman has also said there will be several lane closures from next week for a fortnight to carry out repairs on the most severe defects in the road.
Driver Danielle Anthony, 25, described the pothole as a silent killer after witnessing a near-miss while travelling from her home in North Cave to Hull.
She said: "I use the road every day and the pothole was there for about two months.
"It was horrendous and although I knew about it, I was worried someone wouldn't and could crash.
"I was following a vehicle one morning when they hit this pothole covered with water.
"The car must have sank a good 5in then swerved, narrowly missing a lorry in the lane next to it.
"If a motorbike or a less experienced driver had hit it, they could have killed."
Danielle posted her experience on the Mail's website.
It was viewed 9,000 times.
Hours after being contacted by the Mail about the issue, the Highways Agency carried out a temporary repair on the collapsed manhole on Monday evening, with a permanent repair on Tuesday evening.
Danielle said: "I'm glad it is finally done.
"It just shows the power of publicity.
"The road is also quite bad near Brough and Hessle if you are heading westbound."
A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency, which maintains the road, said safety is a top priority and the roads in the region have a rigorous safety inspection and maintenance regime.
She said: "We are also aware of recent deterioration of the road surface at other locations on the A63, which has worsened as a result of the severe weather.
"The Highways Agency will be carrying out priority repairs on the most severe defects next week
"This work will require a number of lane closures in both directions for the next two weeks. Work will be carried out overnight in order to minimise disruption to road users."
In addition, previously planned work to resurface the A63 eastbound between Melton and Welton, and westbound between Brighton Street and Priory Way, will start from next week.
The spokeswoman said: "The work has been brought forward to provide a longer-term solution to surface defects.
"This work will also involve overnight lane closures and is due to be completed before the end of next week, subject to weather conditions.
"During the work, drivers are asked to plan in advance and allow extra time for their journeys."
Anyone who believes they may have spotted a defect on the A63 should call the Highways Agency information line on 0300 1235000.
