HUNDREDS of workers at a cake firm in Hull began a 24 hour protest against their employer this morning. Employees gathered at the Greencore Cake and Desserts plant in Amsterdam Road from 5am. They were joined by representatives from union Unite, which claims the firm is attacking the workers' pay rights. Michael Page, 48, is a mixer at the factory. He said: "The way this company has treated us is disgusting. "While some workers are losing their homes, management are taking bonuses. It's not right."
According to Unite, Greencore, whose revenue rocketed by nearly 45 per cent in 2012, is seeking to impose changes to terms and conditions and remove shift, overtime and bank holiday pay. Workers voted by 81 per cent to take action, angered by the company's breach of promise. Last year, Greencore was forced by a tribunal to reverse the changes, which the union claims would strip the workforce of £1.2m in wages. However, Unite said the firm has attempted to dodge the court's ruling by simply issuing new contracts to the workforce. The strike is set to continue until 4.59am tomorrow.
