An anti-fracking protester has been arrested after allegedly clashing with police. About 35 campaigners gathered at the Crawberry Hill site near Walkington today. They said they were concerned protesters would be evicted from the site. About 20 police officers were reported to be at the site, run by Rathlin Energy UK Ltd, to oversee the delivery of fuel. A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "Officers were deployed to allow peaceful protest and for the lawful business to be allowed to take place. "During the course of this activity one man was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody." Campaigners have occupied a grass verge close to Rathlin's drilling site since May. A deadline issued by East Riding Council for the group to remove caravans, tents and wooden structures from the site expired yesterday. Campaigner Jon Mager said: "With the number of officers we thought they may try to evict those at the camp. But it turned out to be something of nothing." Rathlin has always maintained it has no intention of fracking – a way of breaking up shale rock to release natural gas – at Crawberry Hill or at its other site in Holderness.
