A YOUNG father has been left scarred for life after he was hit round the face with a piece of metal as he visited his baby daughter.
Josh Trigg, 20, hit Josh Sweeting, 19, in the face with a metal bracket, used to attach a television to the wall, causing a deep gash above his right eyebrow.
Mr Sweeting was leaving ex-girlfriend Laura Ledbrook's house in Herber Street, Goole, where he was visiting his 12-month-old daughter, when Trigg, her new boyfriend, attacked him.
He pleaded guilty to wounding at Hull Crown Court on the first day of his trial.
Prosecuting, John Thackray said: "All was well inside the house but the defendant followed him outside.
"He had taken a metal bracket used to fix the TV to the wall and the defendant came towards the complainant brandishing the bar and challenged the complainant to a fight.
"The complainant was not interested so the defendant hit him over the head with the metal bracket and ran off."
Mr Sweeting was taken to Goole and District Hospital, where the wound was held together using Steri-Strips.
Since the injury, Mr Sweeting suffers pain in his scar and feels self-conscious when talking to people.
Mr Thackray said: "He finds he tries to cover his face when people talk to him because he is very conscious of a deep scar.
"The scar won't go away. It will be a constant reminder of what happened."
Defending Trigg, who has previous convictions for battery and common assault, Peter Bryne said he hit Mr Sweeting because he believed he had taken drugs or alcohol – although this was not confirmed – and he had previously been assaulted by Mr Sweeting.
Mr Bryne said: "He thought the complainant was under the influence of something and that was affecting how he was looking after the child. He was unsteady on his feet.
"That is against a background of earlier violence when he had been assaulted but had not reported it to the police.
"He let it fester and when he saw the complainant on this day, let his temper get the better of him, followed after him and inflicted the injury."
Sentencing Trigg, who is expecting a child with Miss Ledbrook in March, to two years in a young offenders' institution, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said: "Mr Sweeting will be left with a lifetime reminder of what you did to him.
"I trust you wish to change your ways, only time will tell, but I warn you, if there is anymore violence in the future, mercy will not be shown."
