A driver has been prosecuted for dropping a cigarette end out of his car.

Stephen Ellis was fined after being spotted dropping the cigarette end out of the driver's window on Ellis Street, east Hull, on July 13, 2012.

Ellis, of Shelley Avenue, east Hull, was written to on several occasions about paying the fine, but no payment was received.

Ellis failed to attend Hull Magistrates' Court and was fined £175, ordered to pay £150 costs and a £15 victim surcharge, totalling £340.

Councillor John Hewitt, Hull City Council's portfolio holder for neigh-bourhoods and communities, said: "We want to encourage people to take more care when disposing of litter. It can be quite easy to forget that dropping cigarette ends is classed a littering, which is an offence.

"There are more than 4,100 litter bins across the city, so there is no excuse. If you don't dispose of your litter properly, you may receive a fixed penalty notice or face legal action."

Hull City Council carries out regular patrols looking for environmental offences such as littering, graffiti and dog fouling.
