A CHILDREN'S park in east Hull will receive a £30,000 makeover in the new year.
The Cullen Close children's play park will get new play equipment and a complete refurbishment of the grounds.
It follows complaints from residents of nearby Corona Drive, Hathersage Road and Lambwath Road that the park has fallen into disrepair.
Holderness ward councillor, Jackie Dad, said the uneven surface and large potholes made it dangerous for children to play there.
She said: "The park was becoming unsafe for children and it has been very neglected over the years.
"Much of the equipment is more than 30 years old and the play surface has large holes in it.
"If a child fell over in the park they would probably hurt themselves quite badly."
Funding for the refurbishment has been agreed with fellow ward councillors Gill Kennett and Chris Sumpton as part of their annual ward budget.
Cllr Dad is delighted work on the new park can now begin.
She said: "The Cullen Close play park has been in urgent need of an upgrade for years and wasn't properly maintained.
"People in the area really wanted to see improvements made to it and I'm glad to see something happening.
"I have been working on the plans for the play park for a while, but it was only when I arranged a meeting in October to finally identify the funding and push for final plans that things got going. Hopefully, residents will be happy with the improvements and in the future I will work hard to ensure that the equipment is maintained properly."
The refurbishment will include new play equipment, new surfacing, two benches, new bins, a netball hoop and some landscaping.
A start date for the work has not yet been set but Cllr Dad hopes it will be completed in time for the Easter holidays.
She said: "This is only a small park but it is very important to the community in this area. With the new equipment and security, parents will finally be able to take their young children to play outside safely and older children will be able to play on their own near their homes."
Cllr Dad said she hopes it will encourage more residents to use local facilities.
"It's going to bring this community together a lot more than it is now and improve their quality of life," she said.
"The sports facilities will help children stay healthy and I hope the new benches will encourage parents and grandparents to spend time there and socialise."
