PLANS for a new discount supermarket in Bransholme to be developed by Netto and Sainsbury's could create up to 50 new jobs.

The two supermarket chains recently announced a joint venture company to oversee a programme of new store openings in the UK.

Now it has been revealed that Hull City Council has agreed to sell a site, off Bude Road in Bransholme, to the joint company for £5m.

The site already has planning consent for a food store, but it is believed Netto and Sainsbury's want to open a smaller store.

The sale is conditional on the company securing the necessary planning consent for the new store and an 88-space car park.

The partnership between Danish chain Netto and Sainsbury's will consist of 15 Netto stores to be opened by the end of 2015. If the trial proves successful, the company said next stage of the joint venture will see the new format rolled out across the country. Per Bank, CEO of Netto's parent company Dansk Supermarked, said at the time: "It's great to be bringing a new twist to the rapidly-growing UK discount sector." "We'll offer market-leading value to customers with the freshness and innovation that customers rightly associate with Denmark." The move will mark a return to Hull for Netto who used to run a supermarket on Beverley Road, which was taken over by Asda.
