LORD Prescott is to be made an honorary graduate of the University of Hull.

The former Hull East MP will be made a Doctor of Science (in Economics).

He joins seven other notable figures being honoured by the university this week.

Lord Prescott will graduate with students at 11.30am on Friday at the Cottingham Road campus.

It will be his second degree from the university, after graduating in 1968 with a degree in economics and economic history.

Lord Prescott was elected to represent Hull East in 1970, which he did until he stepped down in the May 2010 election.

In July of that year he entered the House of Lords as a life peer with the title Baron Prescott, of Kingston upon Hull in the County of East Yorkshire.

Last year he became Labour's candidate to become the first Humberside police and crime commissioner.

But he was beaten to the role by Matthew Grove, the Conservative candidate, in November.

Professor Calie Pistorius, vice chancellor of the University of Hull, said: "Our degree ceremonies are a cause for great celebration as our students embark on the next chapter of their lives.

"Graduation gives us the opportunity to congratulate our students on their hard work and thank their families and friends.

"To make the occasion even more special, this year's honorary degrees will go to eight diverse people whose endeavours should provide an inspiration to all of our newest graduates, no matter what path they choose to take."

The honorary graduands include humanitarian Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow OBE, who set up a relief charity and a scheme called Mary's Meals, which today provides nutritious daily meal to more than 700,000 children across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

Also being honoured as a Doctor of Music is soprano and music lecturer Sarah Leonard.

Ms Leonard is one of the countries most respected and versatile sopranos.

She has appeared throughout the world in major concert halls, opera houses and festivals and has worked closely with composers.

She teaches at the University of Hull and at the Central School of Speech and Drama as well as being a regular tutor at Benslow Music.

Other honorary graduands are nursing expert and alumna Lady Roberts, medical scientist Professor Terence Ryan, politics Professor Jack Hayward, physicist Professor Gillian Gehring OBE and veterinary scientist Professor Peter Holmes.
