A FORMER chief superintendent has formally denied an allegation of rape and six other offences at the start of his trial. Colin Leslie Andrews, 57, pleaded not guilty to rape, stalking, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidation, harassment, and two counts of common assault at Manchester Crown Court this afternoon. The former Humberside Police chief superintendent, who wore a grey suit, white shirt, and navy tie, spoke only to confirm his name and reply "not guilty" when each of the charges were put to him as he stood in the dock of court number three. Charges of rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, harassment, and common assault relate to the same female complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons. The charges of stalking and intimidation relate to another woman who cannot be identified. Mr Andrews, of Brough, East Yorkshire, also faces an allegation of common assault against Owen Phillips. The charges were read before a jury of five men and seven women that was sworn in before being sent home for the day. The prosecution is expected to open its case against the retired officer tomorrow. Mr Andrews joined the force in 1975 and is a former head of its operations branch. He retired in 2012 but later rejoined in a civilian role as business manager in the force's criminal justice unit.
