THE organisers of the Christmas lights switch-on in Beverley have promised this year's event will be the best yet.

A series of activities will be held throughout the day on Sunday (November 30), before the town's festive lights are switched on at 4.10pm by Hull City legend Dean Windass.

Attractions will include an outdoor ice-skating rink.

Phil Scaife, co-owner of De Lacy Hair & Beauty in Saturday Market, has helped to organise the event.

He said: "This year is going to be the biggest and most spectacular Christmas lights event that Beverley has ever seen.

"On behalf of the Chamber of Trade, we look forward to welcoming all the residents of Beverley and visitors from further afield for what will be a magical occasion for all the family.

"We are very proud that this is an all-day event and not just a quick flick of a switch like typical switch-on events.

"We have organised this to be a truly memorable day."

A huge celebration starting at 1pm in Saturday Market will see guests treated to a spectacle of events, activities and games.

Princess Elsa and Olaf the Snowman, from the hit Disney film, Frozen, will meet and greet the crowds.

Live music acts, including local bands, will be taking to the Beverley FM stage to entertain the crowds throughout the day.

There will also be a helter-skelter, a merry-go-round, and vintage funfair rides in Saturday Market.

A host of other special guests will join in, with Hull KR's mascot, Rufus the Robin, handing out gifts, and Father Christmas meeting and greeting children in his grotto.

This year's lights include new, large snowflakes, which have been installed on new lamp posts, along with a motif wishing everyone a merry Christmas.

This year, families, as well as businesses, have been able to sponsor the lights.

Prue Blake, of the Christmas Lights Group, said: "With kind support, the Christmas lights are getting better and better."

Sponsorship money will go towards local charities.
