THIRTY guns have been handed over to police in Hull and the East Riding during a weapons amnesty. For the last two weeks, five stations in the Humberside Police area have been accepting the firearms over the front counter. In Hull, 16 weapons were handed over, while 14 were surrendered in East Riding. Among the haul were shot guns, rifles, hand guns and pistols. Chief Inspector Neil Pattison said: "Our streets are safer now as a result of this initiative because weapons, which were previously in circulation, have now been safely disposed of." Imitation guns, starting pistols and ball-bearing weapons were also given to police. The amnesty formed part of a nationwide intiative which saw police forces up and down the country accept weapons over their front counters. Chief Insp Pattison said: "The purpose of the operation was to remove firearms from criminal availability and, in doing so, reduce the risk of harm to the public, protect communities and reduce the likelihood that firearms will be available for use by criminals." The amnesty followed a change in firearms legislation in July this year relating to antique weapons, which means some people who once lawfully possessed firearms no longer do so.
