IT SEEMS East Yorkshire is fast becoming the filming capital of the north.

After Hollywood stars Catherine Zeta Jones and Bill Nighy descended on Bridlington and Beverley to film scenes for the new Dad's Army movie, it is now Goole's turn to be in the spotlight.

Filming for the new three- part ITV thriller Black Work, starring Sheridan Smith, Matthew McNulty and Douglas Henshall, is already under way.

Malcolm Boatman, East Riding and Goole Town councillor, said: "There's no such thing as bad publicity and this is great news for Goole.

"We all know what is happening in Beverley and Bridlington with the filming of Dad's Army and it's great that Goole is involved with an exciting project like this.

"Hopefully, the programme will show Goole's magnificent architecture and, of course, the town's docks."

Following her critically- acclaimed roles in hit television shows Cilla and Mrs Biggs, Sheridan plays police officer Jo Gillespie, whose world is thrown into turmoil when her undercover policeman husband Ryan is shot dead in mysterious circumstances.

She resolutely sets out to discover who murdered him and has to confront difficult truths about her family life and her marriage to Ryan.

Sheridan studied at Hull's Northern Academy of Performing Arts before moving to London to pursue an acting career.

She has already been spotted filming scenes for the drama at the East Riding Council Offices in Church Street and outside Goole Parish Church.

Alastair Don, location manager for Black Work, explained why Goole was chosen for filming.

He said: "Goole was originally in the script for Black Work as one of the characters visits the town. "We visited the town and decided it had the right kind of look visually.

"Everyone involved with filming has been so helpful and couldn't have done more.

"We have met some fantastic people and wrote to them to thank them for being so great."

Black Work is written by Matt Charman, produced by Mammoth Screen, and will be backed by Screen Yorkshire, through the Yorkshire Content Fund.

Executive producer Hugo Heppell, head of investments at Screen Yorkshire, said: "Black Work is an exciting addition to Screen Yorkshire's production slate and we're delighted to reignite our partnership with Mammoth Screen, with whom we worked with previously on the acclaimed Lost In Austen and Wuthering Heights.

"Sheridan Smith is one of the UK's brightest acting talents and we're confident that, coupled with the stellar writing credentials of Matt Charman, Black Work has the making of an unforgettable hit drama for ITV and Yorkshire."

The three-part thriller is expected to air on ITV in March.

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economy, investment and inequalities at East Riding Council, said she is pleased film crews are back in the region.

She said: "I am delighted that locations in the East Riding are being discovered by production companies.

"This drama, along with the current filming of Dad's Army, will certainly help to put the East Riding on the map.

"The council will continue to work closely with the production companies to ensure their filming goes as smoothly as possible.

"We want as many businesses in the East Riding to benefit from these opportunities."
