It's no trick! Halloween girl, 7, finds metal bolt in her Marks and Spencer tub of nuts treat

A SCHOOLGIRL and her family had a Halloween fright when they returned from a trick or treat trip to find a bolt in a tub of M&S nuts she was given.

Kady Akester, seven, had visited around ten homes in the Harpham Grove area of east Hull's Preston Road estate on Friday.

It is not known at which house Kady was given the Super Berry and Almond tub.

Her mother, Toni Cole, 33, who lives with her daughter, partner Gareth Akester, 25, and their son Zak on the estate, fears a child could easily have choked.

She said: "I am disgusted. A child could have choked to death on that bolt."

Miss Cole had accompanied her daughter on her trick or treating expedition, while Mr Akester stayed at home to look after their son, who the couple believed was too young to join her big sister.

She said: "I had wanted to open the tub of nuts while we were out, but Kady had said, 'No mummy. We'll wait until we get home.'

"When we got home, we all went into the kitchen and I handed the tub of nuts to Gareth.

"But before he opened the tub he spotted a bolt, which was about an inch long. It was loose inside. The tub is clear plastic so he could see right inside.

"We put the tub away in a cupboard, because we didn't want to risk the children opening it.

"It's a good job Zak wasn't with us when we were out trick or treating. I'm sure he would have wanted to open the tub straightaway and I'd have probably let him."

Miss Cole said Kady is old enough to have known not to have put the bolt in her mouth, but she is worried about what could have happened if a young toddler had been given the nuts.

"It would have been horrible if a younger child had found the bolt," she said.

Miss Cole and Mr Akester had considered the possibility that the bolt had been deliberately placed inside the tub by a prankster.

She said: "To begin with, we all thought it was some sort of trick. A really dangerous trick.

"But when we looked at the tub closely we could clearly see it had not been tampered with.

"The whole experience has made me, as a parent, really wary about accepting things from strangers."

Kady appears unfazed by her ordeal.

"Nothing will put Kady off Halloween," said Miss Cole. "She absolutely loves getting dressed up and going out trick or treating.

"People were generous and gave her lots of goodies. It's a shame this has happened."

It is not known which branch of M&S, which has stores across East Yorkshire, the nuts were bought.

However, Miss Coles yesterday took the product to M&S in Whitefriargate, city centre.

She said: "The store manager told us the tub would be sent away for investigation."

No one from M&S was available for comment.
