WORK has started on knocking down the Laxthorpe tower block on Orchard Park in north Hull. With the Kinthorpe building almost completely rubble, work started on the neighbouring tower block on Friday afternoon. Hull City Council had hoped to employ demolition specialists to use explosives to bring down both tower blocks. However, they are being dismantled mechanically because of their proximity to other buildings, including Thorpepark Primary School. Lorna Litherland, who has lived near the Laxthorpe block for 36 years, said: "It is a bit sad to see it go as it's part of the skyline. "The work hasn't been too bad, although I came to my car and there was a bit of dust on it from the demolition. I won't be putting my washing out until it's finished. "I have been fascinated to see how they have been pulling down the tower blocks."
Manchester contractor Connell Brothers has been appointed by the council to demolish Laxthorpe and Kinthorpe in a £393,000 contract. The two sites, along with Highcourt, which will be demolished in the new year, will be redeveloped with new housing as part of a wider regeneration scheme on the estate. Teresa Western, 36, of Orchard Park, used to deliver newspapers to the tower blocks. "It is a bit sad to see them go," she said. "Driving into Hull you knew you were nearly home when you could see the tower blocks. "There was a nice community area and residents used to play bingo at the bottom. "I wouldn't use the lift as I don't trust lifts, so I used to walk up the stairs to deliver the papers." The dismantling work is expected to take several weeks to complete, given the complex nature of the task.
