MORE than £36,000 of illegal tobacco has been seized at Hull Port.
Border Force officers caught eight passengers trying to smuggle the 200kg haul into the UK on Tuesday morning.
The six men and two women, all from the Doncaster area, admitted they were carrying tobacco but could not give the exact amounts.
When officers searched their luggage they found each bag packed with between 25kg and 35kg of hand-rolling tobacco.
Sam Bullimore, of Border Force, said: "This was an excellent piece of detection work by our officers.
"We will continue to work with HM Revenue and Customs and the police to identify the gangs behind attempts like this and bring them to justice."
Anyone with information about attempted smugglings are asked to call the smuggling hotline on 0800 595000.
