Police have been carrying out extra patrols after a woman was robbed in her home by a masked knifeman.

The 27-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her hands after the man, who had been lying in wait in her home in Kirk Ella, attacked her with the knife.

An 18-year-old man was yesterday arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with the attack in West Ella Road on Wednesday.

Officers have also been delivering leaflets to homes in the area to reassure residents and appeal for information.

PC Andy White said: "We have been out delivering about 50 letters to homes because we want to get as much information as possible, as soon as possible.

"This was a very serious incident and the victim has been left injured, as well as badly shaken.

"We will continue to conduct door-to-door inquiries."

Officers are also appealing for a woman who saw a man acting suspiciously before the robbery at 4.30pm to come forward.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "Police are still appealing for witnesses, specifically people who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area before or after the incident.

"In the Mail, there are women quoted who claim to have seen a man acting suspiciously. Police would like to speak to those people."

Armed police were deployed to the corner of West Ella Road and School Lane in the village at about 5pm but the intruder had fled the scene.

Police have described the man as 5ft 7in, slim and wearing a grey jacket.

Jamie Church, headteacher at the nearby St Andrew's School, confirmed one of his teachers ran out to give first aid to the woman, who had made her way out of the house after the attack.

Mr Church said: "One of my teachers, Mr Wood, went straight outside to help the woman.

"There were quite a few people outside trying to help her."

Parents spoke of their shock after spotting a man acting suspiciously in a small woodland, close to the school, about an hour before the attack happened.

One woman, who only gave her name as Natalie, said: "I could see a man through some trees and sitting on a wall.

"He looked very suspicious and had a large bag."

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting crime reference number 2070429.
