A record number of fundraisers strode through Beverley today in memory of loved ones. On World Alzheimer's Day, more than 300 people took part in the annual Beverley Memory Walk – raising thousands of pounds in the process. The 1.5-mile walk began in Annie Reed Court at 11.30am but had to be delayed slightly because of the vast number of people wanting to get involved. Katie Lowis, 22, from Hull, took part in the walk in memory of her grandad. She said: "The atmosphere was great and it was brilliant to see so many people. "My grandad, Robert Evans, died seven years ago and suffered from Alzheimer's. I wanted to do something for him and managed to raise £160 for charity." The event was organised by the Alzheimer's Society. Zoe Barraclough, community fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Society in South Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "It was an absolutely fabulous event, with record-breaking numbers. "Memory Walk is one of the most important dates in our calendar. "It is a fantastic way to bring communities together to raise much-needed awareness and funds for people living with dementia and their carers. "We were always really excited about the walk in Beverley this year because it was bigger than ever. "We had the bonus that the walk took place on World Alzheimer's Day, which made it even more poignant for families to come together. "Everyone has their own reasons for taking part in a memory of a loved one, to support a person affected by dementia or to get active with family and friends for a good cause."
