A NINE-year-old stroke victim is taking her first steps to recovery at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Becky Liddle, who suffered a stroke at school two months ago, is continuing her recovery in Hull after being transferred from Leeds General Infirmary.

The Keyingham Primary School pupil has also made her first visit home since suffering the debilitating stroke.

They are also hoping she will be able to return to school before the end of the year.

Becky lost movement in the right side of her body and initially lost her speech when she suffered the stroke.

Her mum, Michelle Liddle, said: "She's done surprisingly well considering what she was like when we got to Leeds.

"The consultant didn't even know if she would recover, let alone make the progress she has.

"She can walk with people helping her.

"She's still a little bit unsteady on her feet, but at least we have got her up and she can move around now.

"She's also got movement in her right shoulder and upper arm, but movement in her lower arm has not come back yet.

"She has got some problems with cognitive memory and short-term memory but the therapists are going to work on that."

Brave Becky has kept smiling throughout her ordeal.

Mrs Liddle said: "She's very chirpy, she has never lost that.

"She has just accepted what has happened and is determined to get better."

Mrs Liddle remained alongside Becky throughout her hospital stay in Leeds.

Becky's transfer to Hull Royal Infirmary means it is easier for her dad, Andrew, to also see her every day.

The couple are now hoping Becky will be able to return to school in the coming months.

Mrs Liddle said: "We are hoping she will be able to go back to school this year. It will be a phased return.

"She saw some of her school friends when she came home at the weekend, which was great."

Mrs Liddle is incredibly proud of her daughter.

She said: "Becky has never said 'why me?', she has just got on with it."

The family are now hoping East Riding Council will be able to provide an adapted property so Becky can leave hospital.

Mrs Liddle said: "We are waiting to be allocated a specially-adapted property, preferably a bungalow, so we can have Becky home with us.

"It would be absolutely amazing to have her back with us."

A council spokesman said: "Mr and Mrs Liddle were put on the rehousing list on September 3, on receipt of their application.

"Their request for ground-floor accommodation in the Keyingham area is being actively pursued and we will assist once a vacancy arises, bearing in mind the needs of others on the waiting list."
