Luxury Porsche travellers leave Orchard Park playing fields

TRAVELLERS who sparked controversy by pitching up on playing fields in Orchard Park with luxury caravans and a £65,000 Porsche have left.

Hull City Council was granted a court order on Wednesday, which required the travellers to leave Danepark fields.

Yesterday, the fields were vacated.

Fourteen caravans had arrived at the site last Wednesday.

Ward councillor Terry Geraghty said he was pleased the travellers had moved before the start of the football season.

He said: "We do not want travellers on our football pitches.

"Pitches are for sport, not travellers to set up camp on. There are designated sites for travellers to make use of.

"We are very short of grounds in this city. People pay good money, through their subs, to play on these pitches, so it's not fair that others can turn up and cause damage."

Last week, the travellers told the Mail they would leave the area in a clean state, provided the council provided them with the means.

Industrial bins were provided, but it was not clear last night if they had been used.

In an interview with the Mail shortly after they arrived, father-of-five George Anderson, 41, who acted as spokesman for the travellers, said he "couldn't knock" the people of Orchard Park.

He said: "You get good and you get bad everywhere you go, but we can't knock people around here. Everyone has been really friendly to us. We've even had people fetching us water."

Mr Anderson had said the group wanted to keep "themselves to themselves" and cause as little disruption to locals as possible.

However, the Mail saw young travellers riding a quad bike and a mini-motorbike dangerously across the playing fields, performing wheelies, before returning to the caravans.

Mr Anderson explained that the group had wanted to pitch up at a permanent, council-owned travellers' site in Cottingham, but were turned away because there was no room.

Prior to arriving in Orchard Park, Mr Anderson said the group had been kicked off the grounds of Fitness First in Cottingham.

It is not known where the travellers have relocated to.

Councillor Danny Brown said there have been problems with travellers in his ward of Sutton Park.

He said: "The police need to take stronger action against travellers."
