FOR months, gas engineer Simon Moreton has pounded the city's streets dressed as one of the world's most famous superheroes.

Now Hull's very own Batman could be hanging up his cape after raising almost £1,400 for charity.

Simon, 37, decided to raise money for the Hull and East Yorkshire (Hey) Kids Diabetes after his godson, Kane, was diagnosed with the condition.

Taking to the streets of Hull two or three nights a week, Simon has covered an average of 30 miles a week since February.

He said: "It feels great to raise so much money for such a great cause.

"When I first started doing this I planned on raising £500. I didn't realise how successful it would be."

Of course, every Batman needs their Robin, and Simon was joined by brother-in-law Liam Watson, who raised money for the Special Stars Foundation, a charity that helps children and young people with disabilities across Hull and East Yorkshire.

Simon presented a cheque to his chosen charity on Tuesday evening.

He said: "I'm still deciding on whether to continue as Batman.

"The reaction I have had from people has been fantastic, no one has had a bad word to say.

"My only regret is that I couldn't get around everywhere, but I have had to juggle being Batman and having a full- time job and raising a family so it has been hard at times.

"I'll have to keep my costume until I decide."

Simon also feels he has helped raise awareness of diabetes.

He said: "I was a bit naive about diabetes. I thought it was just about controlling your diet but when my six-year-old godson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I was shocked at just how serious it was.

"Since people have read my story in the paper, I have had a few parents come to me for advice after their child was diagnosed with diabetes.

"All of this has been about raising money and awareness of the condition and I am glad I have been able to help.

"I'd like to thank everyone who donated when they saw me."

Challenge 'not too bad'

To raise awareness of the condition and to support the charity that has helped his godson, Kane, Simon Moreton and his brother-in-law, Liam Watson, took part in the Tough Mudder challenge in August.

Simon said: "It wasn't too bad, actually, but then we had done plenty of training running around the streets of Hull.

"Quite a few people said we could have got around the course faster if we had not stopped to help other people, but we are Batman and Robin – that's what we do."
