Hull City fans facing Dover diversion for Lokeren Europa League tie

Hull City supporters face having to swap a sunset on the Humber for blue skies over the white cliffs of Dover as the team heads back to Europe next week.

Fans were hoping for an easy trip to the Continent following City's debut win in the Europa League against Slovakian side AS Trencin last week.

Their dreams seemingly came true when the Tigers were drawn against Belgium's KSC Lokeren in next week's play-off tie.

However, while Lokeren is just a 38-mile drive from the port of Zeebrugge, it is likely that many City fans will have to get there via Dover rather than catching a ferry from Hull.

P&O Ferries says places on its daily sailings from Hull to both Zeebrugge and Rotterdam are few and far between because the tie clashes with the school holidays.

City has received a 1,236 ticket allocation for the match, which is being played on Thursday, August 21.

The return leg at the KC Stadium is expected to attract several hundred Lokeren fans.

A P&O spokesman said: "We are a highly seasonal business and August is our peak of the peak season.

"As a result, we expect to be very heavily booked, if not fully booked, on many sailings out of Hull in August.

"These fixtures on either side of our Hull service coming at short notice can't really do much for our bookings.

"If it was the middle of winter, when we have a lot of spare capacity, it would be a different matter but our scope in August is limited.

"There are a handful of cabins left on the relevant sailings as I look at our reservation system, but my hunch is that we will reach capacity.

"We suspect the bigger impact will be where the much greater capacity is and that is out of Dover, where P&O Ferries alone has 23 departures every day."

Priority tickets for next week's game in Belgium went on sale today to season card holders who bought tickets for the previous away game in Slovakia.

From tomorrow, tickets will go on sale to City fans who bought tickets for last week's return tie at the KC.

A final allocation of tickets will go on general sale from the KC on Tuesday.

Following last month's successful trip to Slovakia, City have announced they will be working with their licensed tour operator Sport Options to offer an official travel package for the game in Lokeren.

The package is available to season card holders only. It includes return flights from Humberside Airport on the day of the game and a match ticket for a total of £330. To book, visit sportoptions.com or call 0207 9356129.
