Panic-stricken residents of Cottingham have spoken of their flooding fears after the latest heavy downpour.
George Street and Sancton Close were among areas badly affected by rain on Sunday.Mick Brady, of George Street, said: "It started in 2007 when practically everyone flooded and ever since then, every time we get a warning of heavy rain, you have to get prepared for it by blocking the back and front door and it just causes panic all round.
"It's been driving me crackers for the past seven years.
"There's not only that, we've reached a point in our life where we could do to move into an apartment off the ground.
"Who wants to buy a house that is in danger of flooding every time it rains?
"I am backward and forward looking at the sinks and checking how far the water is coming and how fast, and I just panic."
Councillor Geraldine Mathieson was out on Sunday visiting some areas hit by sewage.
She said: "I would say 95 per cent of Cottingham is fine when there is heavy water and rainfall but there are certain hotspots, lowest points in the road, that suffer it all and they're getting fed up of it.
"It's not just that there isn't rain water going away, it's driving sewage out of the sewers, so we're getting hygiene problems and it's just very unsanitary to have sewage floating around outside your house.
"We've got people who are watching the weather forecast and they want something done immediately. They don't want to wait for another bit of paperwork to come through."
Brian Preston, 68, of Sancton Close, has had four flood scares in the past two months.
He said: "My wife won't go on holiday any more, she won't even go away. She's frightened because we've got airbrick covers but you've got to put them on yourself.
"We're relying on someone else to put them on and if it's the middle of the night, you can't expect someone to get up at 3am because it's raining.
"My wife drives me mad looking at the forecast every five minutes."
Alex Duke, chairman of Cottingham Flood Action Group, was also out monitoring the latest situation. He said: "The threat was there and people were aware it was going to happen.
"The worry is building up and they do get in a panic.
"It can't carry on having repeated flooding and it not affect people. It's not because they're weak, they are worried about their property."
Cottingham councillor Lena Slater said it was a "desperate situation".
Cllr Slater said: "What we really need is for people to understand that Yorkshire Water has to make a proper assessment of the problems facing Cottingham residents, particularly in the area of the capacity of the sewers – that is a huge issue for us.
"If The Water Services Regulation Authority won't allow Yorkshire Water to put capital investment into the sewers, then we have to go to Ofwat and say, 'well, why won't you do it?'"
