The sound of champagne corks popping signalled the start of the most stylish Ladies' Day yet. The Journal, sister magazine to the Mail, teamed-up with St Stephen's to add extra gloss to the annual event at Beverley Races. And although racegoers had umbrellas at the ready, the rain held off for much of the day, allowing ladies and gents to show off their glamorous outfits. Friends Lucy Watkins and Abbey Mountifield, both of Beverley, chose their dresses first and then found hats to match. Lucy said: "I like getting dressed up and just the overall atmosphere and the thrill of getting a win, even if it is a little one." Abbey added: "It is an excuse to wear a nice dress." Among the attractions was a catwalk show in the St Stephen's style marquee, compered by Big Brother star Dan Bryan, and the much-anticipated "best-dressed" male and female competitions.
Julie Short, from Beverley, won the best-dressed woman award. The 38-year-old designer launched her own business, Divine Fascination, last January, and made her winning dress and fascinator in just two weeks. "I am so shocked to have won," Julie said. "I would like to thank the judges for picking me. "Nothing like this ever happens to me, I just can't believe it." Zara Davis, 32, from Kingswood, spent the day celebrating her hen party with 17 friends. She said: "I've never been to the races before but I wanted to do something different instead of just going out in town. "It's been a great day. I only won £2.25 but it's been fantastic." Annabel Robinson, Georgie Thompson and Julie Thompson, from Walkington, are regulars at Ladies' Day. Julie said: "we come here every year, we love that it is such a family event. "Everyone gets dressed up and it has a real community feel. We've had a great day and placed some bets with one of the horses we chose coming first and the other second." Others had travelled from further afield. Patricia Rimmer, who lives in Hull, welcomed mum Anne Slattery and cousins Valerie Stevenson and Sharon Farmer all the way from their home in Scotland. The family had a special reason for wanting to attend. Patricia said: "We had said so many times we were going to come to the races for the last couple of years and it never really worked out. Then we lost my mum's brother a year ago and he loved the races so we decided we are going to go and have a good time. "He was very good at the races so hopefully we will have some of his luck. We picked Saint Thomas in the race because Thomas was his name." Kayleigh Green was joined by friends Charlotte Flynn and Clare Browne, who were attending their first ever ladies day. Kayleigh said: "We're having a bit of a girlie day. I left my outfit until the last minute which I shouldn't have because I work in retail." Clare added: "We've been watching all the hats and the other outfits." And they had a unanimous answer when asked what they were most looking forward to enjoying on the day: "Champagne!"
