East Yorkshire should expect strong winds and some heavy rain on Sunday as ex-Hurricane Bertha hits Britain.
The tropical storm is crossing the Atlantic after battering the Caribbean.Hull forecaster Lewis Dobson, of UK Weather Forecast, said the latest weather models showed strong winds would affect the region tomorrow afternoon. He said: "As we forecast yesterday, Bertha is set to hit Britain in the south-west before heading in a north by north-easterly direction. "This morning's models for Hull and the East Riding show winds will be slightly stronger and for a longer period. "The strongest winds are expected in the late afternoon and early evening on Sunday with gusts of 50-60mph for a time, especially in coastal areas. "Some rain is still expected, although it will be more patchy in nature for East Yorkshire, but there is a risk of some heavy showers, and heavy thundery downpours locally, developing in the afternoon.
"Wales, north-west England, northern England and Scotland will see the heaviest of the rain from this system."
A combination of strong winds and rain could result in some localised flooding. Mr Dobson said: "It is a rather deep low-pressure system for the time of year so, with trees in full leaf, strong winds and saturated ground from rainfall, there is a risk of minor disruption in the form of localised flooding due to blocked drainage systems and/or uprooting of trees due to strengthening winds."The Met Office is urging people to keep an eye on weather warnings.
A spokesman said: "Hull should escape the worst of it but that is still very uncertain. There could still be very heavy rainfall and the second highest spring tide, so there is the potential, if Hurricane Bertha changes direction, it could cause issues for coastal flooding with very large waves.
"People need to be really aware and keep up to date with the warnings."
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning in anticipation of heavy rainfall and the Environment Agency says there is a "low risk" of flooding. No specific flood warnings or alerts have been issued for our region, however.
Today is set to remain largely dry with periods of sunshine and temperatures reaching 21C. Monday will bring sunshine in the morning and showers in the afternoon with a top temperature of 18C, but it will remain windy, with gusts of up to 35mph.
More heavy showers are expected on Tuesday when the winds will ease and temperatures will reach 17C.
