James Cunningham: 'I'm not trying to force Aaron Heremaia out of Hull FC team'

Hull FC hooker James Cunningham says his only focus is on development at the Black and Whites – and not trying to take Aaron Heremaia's place in the side.

The 20-year-old returned early from a season-loan loan at relegated London Broncos as Lee Radford's injury list deepened through the absence of Heremaia, who limped out of the defeat to Salford Red Devils on July 12.

Cunningham is seen as the long-term successor to the Kiwi, who will join Widnes on a two-year deal in 2015.

But with Heremaia due back from injury in time for the visit to demoted Bradford, the youngster is keen to not step on the 31-year-old's toes in the meantime.

"Aaron is a great player and I am not looking to keep him out of the team when he comes back from injury," Cunningham told the Mail.

"What I want to do is play these next couple of games, try and play well and then use that experience I've gained to build on for next season."

Cunningham made only his second Super League appearance for FC in the 56-10 defeat at Wigan last Friday, following his debut away at Catalan Dragons in 2012.

Given the harshest of re-introductions to life in Black and White, the loss wasn't a far cry away from when he was part of a London side that suffered 20 back-to-back defeats – which included a few hammerings of their own along the way.

But the ex-East Hull amateur says he knows he still has a lot to learn, with Heremaia and Danny Houghton providing the England Academy international with plenty of knowledge to enhance his game before he makes his mark.

"If I can stay in the side when Aaron comes back from injury then that would be great, but I'm not trying to force my way in," Cunningham added.

"I am still very young and have a lot to learn from Aaron and Danny Houghton and that's what I'll be trying to do until the end of the season."

Radford looks set to keep the faith with Cunningham as Hull make a late charge for the play-offs against Castleford Tigers on Thursday.

CASTLEFORD have made Garreth Carvell's loan deal permanent after his release from Hull FC yesterday.
