TWO cousins who raped a young boy, with one filming the abuse, have been described as dangerous paedophiles.

Robert Halder, 47, has been jailed for 14 years for filming his cousin Michael Smith abusing the boy.

Smith, 33, was jailed for 12 years after the court heard he started abusing the boy when he was under ten years old.

The boy later told Halder, hoping he would put a stop to it, but instead he joined in. He raped and abused the boy for six years.

Hull Crown Court heard both have been assessed as posing a significant risk to young boys.

Judge Michael Mettyear, the Honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding, told them: "You both knew he was terribly vulnerable and you exploited that vulnerability.

"You used him again and again for your own perverted pleasure.

"It was disgraceful and disgusting behaviour. He has already suffered a great deal because of what you did.

"The tragedy is his real suffering may be yet to come."

Smith admitted ten child sex charges, including rape and breaching a previously imposed sexual offences prevention order.

Halder admitted 28 counts of sex abuse, which also included rape, in relation to the same boy.

When police raided Smith's house in Stroud Crescent East, Bransholme, they found a computer with 2,285 indecent images, 12 of which were at the most serious level. Some of them were of the victim and Halder.

They traced the boy, who told them he had been abused by Smith and later confided in Halder. He said Halder then began to abuse him as well.

When police searched Halder's home in Enstone Garth, Bransholme, they found a video of himself with the boy among 8,769 indecent images of children.

Also recovered were 197 videos, of which 46 were classed as being in category C – the most serious band of child sexual abuse.

Smith told assessors from Humberside Probation Trust he has a "high level of sexual preoccupation with boys, aged between six and 15".

They judged he poses an "imminent, very high risk of serious harm", including rape, sexual assault and viewing indecent images.

Halder was described as posing a high risk of serious harm to children.

Judge Mettyear said he had considered jailing both men for life, but concluded passing a prison sentence with an extended licence period would be sufficient.

He said: "This is without doubt a very, very serious case.

"It is my judgment that it falls just short and doesn't pass the test of a case that justifies a life sentence.

"As far as both of you are concerned, I have come to the conclusion you pose a significant risk to members of the public.

"I have considered whether determinate sentences would put significant protection in place and have concluded they would not."

Both will remain on licence for an extra six years following their release from custody.

The court heard Smith had previously been given an 11-month jail term in March 2011 for making indecent images of children.

'The victim showed great bravery in disclosing abuse' Detective Constable Robert Milner, officer on the case, said: "These images were some of the worst level that officers have seen. "The complainant showed great bravery in disclosing a history of abuse going back over seven years, by both men. "These two men posed a serious risk to the children of Hull and have now been given lengthy custodial sentences to reflect their offending. "Let this be a warning to others who think they can prey upon the most vulnerable of society. "Humberside Police encourage all victims of such crimes to come forward. The victim in this case had remained silent due to threats and fear of harm, but has now been able to make full disclosures about what has happened and is receiving support and counseling from the police and partner agencies. "This support will continue until such time that the victim is confident it is no longer required."
