A WOMAN has spoken of the moment she saw a father being kicked in the head as he was lying unconscious on the ground.
Danielle Hutchinson said Steven Herbert, 34, was attacked by an "aggressive" group, who "wanted confrontation".
Mr Herbert died after he was assaulted on the corner of Beverley Road and Trafalgar Street at around 6am on New Year's Day.
Miss Hutchinson had met Mr Herbert and a group of others for the first time in the Yorkshireman pub earlier that morning.
Soul Humphries, 22, Samuel Jordan, 22, and Tiffany Clark, 23, admit being involved in a fight with Mr Herbert, but deny murder.
Miss Hutchinson said the group of strangers who met in the pub, including a man called Craig Monroe, had decided to continue celebrating at Mr Monroe's flat and walked along Beverley Road.
She said they came across a group of two men and two women, who were "shouting and stuff, just being aggressive".
Giving evidence from behind a screen at Hull Crown Court, she said: "We was all happy, we were on about going back to a party. None of us wanted any trouble.
"There was anger there. I remember we was walking by and they wanted to cause confrontation.
"It was scary, I was scared, and I wanted to get away from it all."
She said she saw a "shaven-headed man" punch Mr Herbert to the ground.
"He went to the floor, it knocked him out," she said.
"Then the blonde woman ran up to him and kicked him in the side of his head, twice.
"I was scared and I ran up to Steven to help him.
"Then she went to two other lads from our group. They was walking by and she went towards them, I remember her going, shouting, causing trouble with them.
"I remember them shouting and putting their hands up and saying they didn't want no trouble."
Members of Mr Herbert's family left the court as Miss Hutchinson described how she gave Mr Herbert first-aid as he was lying in the road.
"He was knocked out and I realised he wasn't breathing," she said.
"I checked his pulse and stuff and I was helping him, doing mouth-to-mouth and stuff. His eyes were open, but I couldn't find one."
Mr Herbert was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The court has heard he had suffered a "most extreme" brain injury.
The trial continues.
