'Never mind Scottish independence, I'd vote to leave Yorkshire'

Does Hull and East Yorkshire really belong in a greater Yorkshire? Angus Young doesn't think so and says it's time to think independently.

As a Geordie, I'm probably not fully qualified to discuss all things Yorkshire.

But having lived in this neck of the woods for 34 years, I think I'm at least entitled to a view.

It seems to me that East Yorkshire – and Hull in particular – doesn't quite fit into Yorkshire as a whole.

Perhaps it is a matter of geography or some kind of invisible divide loitering somewhere along the M62.

Take tomorrow's start of the Tour de France in Leeds.

Apart from some of the back-up vehicles arriving by ferry the other day, Le Tour is completely avoiding East Yorkshire.

Last week, at a regional media awards bash in Leeds (where else?), they screened a clip of Look North presenters Harry Gration and Amy Garcia completing a sponsored tandem ride along the route of Le Tour's Yorkshire stages.

At one point, the voiceover roared: "Well done, guys! The whole of Yorkshire is behind you!"

Well, not this part because we get the Peter Levy version of Look North complete with its regular extensive coverage of all things deepest Lincolnshire and beyond.

Until I saw the clip I wasn't even aware of Harry and Amy's exploits at all.

I expect the same applies to most people in East Yorkshire.

But it's not just the Beeb's potty idea of what might be relevant to half a million people living on the north bank of the Humber.

At the same awards ceremony, the Mail won the Yorkshire daily newspaper of the year title for the third year running, much to be obvious disgust of the West Yorkshire media mafia.

When our name was pulled out of the envelope, I swear you could hear the distant bells of Holy Trinity Church such was the love in the room at that particular moment.

It wasn't just us, either.

My pal David Burns and his Burnsy Show colleagues found themselves plonked very much out of the way on a table at the very back of the room.

The same applies to Hull City's recent exploits.

Scanning the national coverage before the FA Cup Final, I lost count of the times the word "Humberside" kept cropping up instead of "Yorkshire".

Perhaps it's time to draw a line in the sand and declare our independence from Yorkshire once and for all.

The city and county of Hull did exist in the past. Let's go for it again.
